  1. I have not graduated and do not have the official transcript yet. Is a print-out transcript from institute’s online records system with college’s stamp acceptable?
    Yes, a print-out transcript is acceptable with official endorsement such as college’s stamp. Original copy of official transcript will be required at the time of enrolment.
  2. Is submission of TOEFL scores compulsory? Who can be exempted from submission of TOEFL scores?
    Yes, it is compulsory for applicants to submit TOEFL scores. Applicants whose medium of university instruction is in English can be exempted from submission of TOEFL scores. Applicants would have to provide a letter from their home institute to indicate that the medium of instruction was in English.
  3. Is submission of GRE scores compulsory?
    Yes, GRE is compulsory for all applicants. However, students with an excellent academic track record from renowned universities may request a waiver of this requirement.
  4. I don’t have GRE score but I have GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test of Engineering) and MCAT. Is GATE acceptable?
    No, GRE cannot be replaced by GATE.
  5. I am a Singaporean who has obtained my degree from a university in Australia. Is GRE applicable for my application?
    Yes, GRE is compulsory for all applicants. However, students with an excellent academic track record from renowned universities may request a waiver of this requirement.
  6. Do I need to submit a research proposal?
    No, it is not compulsory to submit a research proposal at time of application.
  7. Do I need to contact the list of CSI supervisors as indicated on CSI website while waiting for the outcome of the application?
    Students may contact CSI PIs to learn more about their respective research. However, final list of lab available for PhD students will only be made available at a later time.
  8. I do not have a passport now. Do I need to get a passport for the application? Can I submit my passport number when I am awarded the scholarship?
    Yes, applicants can submit their passport numbers as soon as they received their new passports.
  9. I am unable to upload my documents onto the Graduate Admission System as the maximum file size allocated is 3MB.
    Please reduce file size if possible. Otherwise, applicants can email the outstanding documents with their names and Application Number to csi_gradprog[at]nus.edu.sg .

    No, there is no bond upon completion. Click here for more information.
  2. Do scholarship holders have to pay for medical insurance?
    No, medical insurance will be covered by scholarship.
  3. Will scholarship holders be issued with an insurance card?

  4. What is the duration of the PhD programme?
    Up to five years. Period of scholarship is for four years.
  5. Do scholarship holders have to serve teaching duties?
    No, scholarship holders are not required to serve teaching duties. However, you may speak with your supervisor on teaching opportunities if you are interested.
  1. Is it compulsory to do lab rotation?
    Each successful candidate will undergo 3 lab rotations with duration of 6 weeks each. Lab rotations are compulsory for all full-time CSI scholarship students. Students must confirm their choice of thesis advisor by the end of the 6th month from the start of the candidature.
  2. Can we work on any project of our choice or will it be decided?
    Projects initiated by student must be approved by PI.
  1. Where will students be seated?
    Students are likely to work in laboratory and will not have a workstation assigned to them. Since staff shares benches in labs, student ought to do so too.
  2. How do I get a replacement for lost matriculation/student registration library card?
    Please log on to the Online Lost Student Card Management System to make a report if you have lost your student card. The replacement fee (inclusive of GST) is $30. As the replacement fees are non-refundable, you may want to wait for a few days before making the application in case the card is found and returned to you.
