Congratulations to Dr. Spencer Yang Chong on receiving the 2022 ASH Abstract Achievement Award, adding on to previous years’ wins!
The American Society of Hematology (ASH), the world’s largest professional society of hematologists, presents awards during its annual meetings to support hematologists in their careers and to honour those who have helped advance the field of hematology. The ASH Abstract Achievement Award is?a merit-based award for trainees who are the first author and presenter on a high-scoring annual meeting abstract.
Dr. Spencer’s winning abstract is titled ‘Acute Anemic Stress Is Modulated By Intercellular Mitochondria Transport from Erythroblastic Island Macrophages to Early Erythroblasts Via CD47-Sirpa Interactions.’ In Dr. Spencer’s words on the winning abstract:
“Intercellular mitochondria transfer is an emerging topic with implications in multiple biological processes. Our study demonstrated the functional importance of mitochondria transfer to mediate bioenergetic profiles of recipient erythroblasts to facilitate their recovery from acute anaemic stress. The findings shed light on the regulatory mechanisms of mitochondria transfer in the context of erythroblasts-macrophage interactions via CD47-SIRP? mediated cell-cell contacts and their downstream signalling. Exploring novel biological processes has been rewarding experience for me in Suda lab, as Prof Suda created a flourishing and inspirational research environment for us to move forward.”
This year’s ASH annual meeting will be held between December 10-13, 2022, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
