Congratulations to Eve Wang Chao, CSI graduate student from Dr Alan Prem Kumar’s group, for achieving the 1st runner-up award of the annual NUS Three Minute Thesis (NUS 3MT). NUS 3MT, organized by The Graduate Students’ Society (GSS) in NUS, aims to select the best candidate to represent NUS at the Universitas 21 (U21) 3MT Final.
This 3MT Competition in NUS is a franchise of the University of Queensland developed academic competition for research graduate students. To qualify for this competition, competitors have to send in a self-recorded video explaining their research topic to a general audience in three minutes. The videos are categorized into 4 themes and judged by a judging panel of esteemed professors from NUS and senior research students from NUS GSS. This year, 18 U21 schools from countries worldwide will compete in the 3MT competition.
Eve’s video was categorized under Populations Aging and Global Health theme and it described her PhD project of using DDX20 as a surrogate marker and her discovery that the triple breast cancers are more sensitive to stain treatment than the other subtypes of breast cancers. This hints that statin has potential to be beneficial for the treatment of triple negative breast cancers.
The competition motivated Eve to consider how she could present her project in a comprehensive yet concise manner that would be easily understood by people from other fields.
Upon winning this award, her video entry will be submitted for the McDonnell International Scholars Academy Symposium for the next round of international competition.
