Professor Yoshiaki Ito: A lifetime of Scientific Investigation

On 5 July, the CSI community gathered together to commemorate Professor Yoshiaki Ito’s contributions over the span of his scientific career. Present at the seminar were Prof. Ashok Venkitaraman, Prof. Yeoh Khay Guan, Prof. Paul Liu, Dr. Ichiro Taniuchi, Prof. Motomi Osato, Prof. Kosei Ito and Prof. Suk-Chul Bae who all gave a short scientific talk.

A Senior Principal Investigator at CSI Singapore and a Yong Loo Lin Professor of Medical Oncology, Professor Ito’s research focus has been on the regulation of stem cells in the stomach and RUNX genes. Following the discovery of RUNX in 1993, his lab uncovered the dual role of  RUNX3 – both as a tumour suppressor and an oncogene. Since then, Professor Ito has many notable publications in the these two areas of research interest.
