Shamill Amedot Udonwa, attachment student from Prof. Chng Wee Joo’s laboratory received the Gold Award for his project at the Singapore Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF).
Congratulations to Shamill Amedot Udonwa, attachment student from Prof. Chng Wee Joo’s laboratory, who clinched the Gold Award at the Singapore Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF) 2019, held from 6th-7th March 2019 at the Community Auditorium, Our Tampines Hub.
Organized by the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Science Centre Singapore (SCS), the competition serves as an excellent platform for students in secondary schools and junior colleges to showcase their scientific research projects to a panel of esteemed scientists from local universities and research institutes. Selected winners go on to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the world’s largest pre-college science competition. Furthermore, they will also be eligible to proceed for A*STAR Talent Search (ATS), which recognises student projects that excel in scientific research across multiple disciplines.
During the poster presentation session, Shamill presented his project about the implications of an oncogenic phosphatase PRL-3 expression, in H929 and U266 cells (human myeloma cell lines) on the efficacy of drug treatment. More importantly, findings from his study demonstrate the therapeutic merits of PRL-3 and could open up avenues for the deployment of novel therapeutic treatments for multiple myeloma.
Notably, the opportunity to interact with distinguished researchers at SSEF has been a humbling and eye-opening experience for Shamill. Shamill would like to extend his sincere appreciation and gratitude to his mentors, Prof. Chng Wee Joo and Dr. Phyllis Chong for their unwavering support in his research journey in CSI and Ms Julia Lim for her dedicated guidance. “I am thrilled to have represented CSI well at SSEF but more importantly, I am really grateful towards everyone who has helped me in one way or another along this journey” he added. Moving forward, Shamill aspires to contribute to the development of novel therapeutic approaches through his research work.
