Single-Cell Res/volution 2023 welcomes you to our inaugural symposium, jointly hosted by CSI Singapore and ENS, France.
The core objective of the Single-Cell Res/volution 2023, is to bring together outstanding researchers in the field of single cell technologies and bioinformatics from Singapore and France for the exchange of ideas and information.
Beyond our own existing scientific collaborations, we hope to spark new interactions between scientists from Singapore and France, and to provide an excellent platform for learning and the exchange of ideas.
Single-Cell Res/volution 2023 will also be running technical hands-on workshops by our Academic tutors and Sponsors on platforms for single-cell sequencing analysis, CSI GeDAC in-house bioinformatics pipelines, as well as, Seurat and NC-core.

Prof. Patrick Tan is Senior Vice Dean of Research at Duke-NUS Medical School Singapore and Chief Scientific Officer at the Genome Institute of Singapore. He is a Senior Principal Investigator at the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore, Executive Director of PRECISE (Precision Health Research Singapore) coordinating Singapore’s National Precision Medicine program, and Professor (adjunct) at Duke University, USA. He received his B.A. (summa cum laude) from Harvard University and MD PhD degree from Stanford University, where he received the Charles Yanofsky prize for Most Outstanding Graduate Thesis in Physics, Biology or Chemistry. Other awards include the President’s Scholarship, Loke Cheng Kim scholarship, Young Scientist Award (A-STAR), Singapore Youth Award (twice), Chen New Investigator Award (Human Genome Organization), President’s Science Award, Japanese Cancer Association International Award and Public Administration Medal (Silver). In 2018, he received the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Team Science Award as Team Leader. He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI), the Bioethics Advisory Committee (BAC), a Board Member of the International Gastric Cancer Association, Board of Reviewing Editors for Science, and on advisory committees for Venture Corporation, Qatar Precision Health Institute, and Riyadh Biotech City (Saudi Arabia).

Emmanuel Barillot research focuses on Computational Systems Biology of Cancer and aims at understanding tumorigenesis and tumor progression using and developing when needed computational approaches for analysing high-throughput data of tumors like multiomics and multimodal data. The main subjects are high-dimensional multi-modal data analysis with machine learning, modeling of signaling network and of spatial organization.
Emmanuel Barillot heads the Department of Computational Oncology at Institut Curie (U900 INSERM, in partnership with Mines ParisTech). He is also Scientific Director of the institut Curie Bioinformatics Core Facility, which is expert in biological data integration, omics data analysis, and support for precision medicine. He also holds a Chair in Cancer Genomics at the Paris Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (PRAIRIE). Emmanuel Barillot has published ~250 articles in bioinformatics, genomics, systems biology, cancer biology, translational and clinical cancer research, biophysics and computer science.

The human genome encodes RNA molecules that instruct the behaviour of cancer cells. Leveraging on the next-generation sequencing technologies, well-established cancer cell lines and animal models, Dr Polly Leilei Chen’s group aims to identify the harmful changes that will occur in RNA molecules after it is made from DNA. It is critical to uncover how these changes trigger a cell to develop into cancer which can eventually lead to the unsatisfactory treatment outcomes for patients with cancers (particularly esophageal, stomach, colon and liver cancer). The long-term goal of Dr Chen’s team is to develop novel cancer therapies targeting these cancer-associated RNA changes.

Professor Wee Joo Chng is a Yong Loo Lin Professor in Medical Oncology and Vice Dean of Research at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, where he is also a Senior Principal Investigator at the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore. He is concurrently the Director of the National University Cancer Institute, Singapore and the Group Director of Research, at the National University Health System.
Professor Chng currently serves as Executive Director of the Singapore Translational Cancer Consortium. His research focuses on the use of global genomics methods (microarray and sequencing platforms) to study the clinical and biological heterogeneity in haematologic malignancies including acute myeloid leukemia, multiple myeloma and lymphoma. Using these methods, he has identified novel prognostic markers and molecular abnormalities in these malignancies, serving as potential targets for therapy and providing insights into disease pathogenesis and biology. He has strong research interest in risk stratification and clinical trials in myeloma.
Professor Chng sits on many international professional committees, such as the International Myeloma Working Group and the Asian Myeloma Network. He has authored more than 300 publications and delivered talks at national and international conferences. He has won multiple awards for his outstanding research including the NUHS Research Excellence Award, the International Myeloma Foundation’s Brian GM Durie Outstanding Achievement Award, the National Medical Excellence Outstanding Clinician Scientist Award, the National Medical Research Council Senior Translational Research (STaR) Award, the National University of Singapore Young Researcher Award, and the Celgene Future Leaders in Haematology Award.

Daniel Gautheret is a professor at Université Paris-Saclay and a group leader at Institute for Integrative Biology of the Cell, Gif sur Yvette, France. He has been studying RNA structure and function using bioinformatics since his Ph.D. and postdoctoral research at Université de Montreal and University of Colorado, Boulder. He has been using evolutionary genomics to predict RNA folds, understand the function of RNA 2D and 3D structural elements and discover new non-coding RNAs in plants and bacteria. His main interest is now RNA alteration in cancer. He is investigating how aberrant and non-coding RNAs can be used as immunotherapeutic targets as well as for patient stratification, diagnosis and outcome prediction.

Trained as an engineer, Leïla Perié did a PhD in experimental immunology at Institut Cochin in France. She then did a postdoc in the Netherlands in the lab of Ton Schumacher at the Netherland Cancer Institute and the lab of Rob de Boer at Utrecht University. She studied hematopoiesis and T cell at the single cell level, mixing experimental and theoretical work. Since 2015, Leïla Perié head a group the Curie Institute in France. Her lab is interested in understanding the hematopoietic tree at the single cell level and combines different experimental and mathematical/computational approaches of single cell lineage tracing to study blood cells production. Leïla is also the head of the single cell core facility of her institute. She has received several prizes and prestigious grant (Starting ERC, bronze medal from CNRS, Prix Paoletti).

Toshio Suda, M.D, Ph.D is a Professor from Department of Medicine at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and a Senior Principal Investigator at Cancer Science Institute of Singapore, National University of Singapore. Dr Suda has studied hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and cancer HSC niches for over forty years. His past work encompasses the purification of HSCs, identification of cytokine signaling in hematopoiesis, and the characterization of HSC niches in bone marrow (BM). Although stem cells differentiate along with a cell autonomous intrinsic program, this process is influenced by the microenvironment of the stem cells niche. He identified the endosteal niche for HSC niche (Cell, 2004), and subsequently established the new field of oxidative stress and stem cell aging (Nature, 2004 and Nature Med, 2006). Dr. Suda has shown that niche cells regulate stem cells through direct adhesion and through the secretion of humoral niche factors such as cytokines, chemokines and extracellular matrix molecules. Together, these niche components and stem cells are thought to form a functioning unit to maintain tissue homeostasis. Dr Suda is also a recipient of the 2020 E. Donnall Thomas Lecture and Prize (American Society of Hematology (ASH) Honorific Award) in recognition for his outstanding contributions to the field of stem cell research.

Yvonne began her research career in Bing Lim’s lab at the Genome Institute of Singapore, where she studied miRNA function and mechanisms of action (Tay et al, Nature 2008). She then pursued her postdoctoral training in the Pandolfi lab at Harvard Medical School, where she investigated how transcripts can co-regulate each other by competing for shared miRNAs (Tay et al, Cell 2011). Now based at the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore and National University of Singapore, Yvonne’s research group studies non-coding RNAs as well as the non-coding untranslated regions (UTRs) of protein-coding mRNAs (Kwok et al, Cancer Res 2021; Chan et al, Nature Cell Biology 2022). As many mRNA populations comprise transcripts with different UTRs, and these UTRs control key processes such as stability, localization and transport, a better understanding of their function may lead to insights into the regulation of key cancer genes.

I was born and raised in Southern California, attended UCLA with a major in Applied Math and Physical Chemistry and Harvard Medical School, with postdoctoral research training in the laboratory of David Livingston at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, as well as clinical training with a residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Board Certification in Medical Oncology at Dana Farber. I established my own independent laboratory in 1984 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, and since 2008 a laboratory at the Cancer Science Institute Singapore, where I served as founding Director.
For the past 38 years my lab has studied gene regulation in normal differentiation and cancer, My laboratory has contributed to understanding the role of transcription factors in cell differentiation and disruption of these pathways in myeloid development and acute myeloid leukemia (AML), lung cancer, and liver cancer. Current efforts include basic studies understanding gene regulation with an aim to manipulate gene expression in in normal and cancer stem cells as well as exploiting differences as a basis for targeted stem cell therapy. Since 2008, my lab has also studied the role of nuclear long noncoding RNAs, and current efforts include studies on antisense RNAs, RNA editing, and noncoding RNAs in myeloid differentiation, gene regulation, DNA methylation, DNA replication, and cancer. Since 2010, the lab has had a major interest on the role of the stem cell oncofetal protein SALL4 in cancer and leukemia.

Céline Vallot is a group leader at Institut Curie since 2017. Her lab works on the dynamics of epigenomes in breast cancer during treatment and the early phases of tumorigenesis, combining experimental and computational approaches. Céline is the recipient of an ERC Starting Grant and has co-founded the Single-Cell Initiative of Institut Curie, a facility enabling the analysis of single cells in space and times at various scales (DNA, RNA, epigenomes, proteins). Céline is also the scientific founder of the company One Biosciences, powering single cell profiling for the discovery of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

Dr. Benoukraf obtained his Ph.D. in Computational Biology at the Immunology Center of Marseille-Luminy, CNRS-INSERM, Aix-Marseille University. After 2 years of postdoctoral training, he gained his scientific independence by being awarded a "Special Fellowship" at the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore. Dr. Benoukraf is now a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Bioinformatics for Personalized Medicine, Assistant Professor, Division of BioMedical Sciences at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He is also a Visiting Assistant Professor and Co-Head of Genomics and Data Analytics Core (GeDaC) at the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore, National University of Singapore.
During the last decade, Dr. Benoukraf has focused his research on developing computational programs and methods for analyzing large genomic and epigenomic datasets with the aim of delineating novel biological mechanisms in pathophysiology.
Dr. Benoukraf's main scientific productions are technological and biological, ranging from the discovery of novel epigenetic mechanisms that regulate gene expression, to the development of a comprehensive database of transcription factor binding sites coupled with DNA methylation profiles.

Denis THIEFFRY has obtained his Ph. D in 1993 at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Brussels, Belgium, under the direction of René THOMAS. He is currently Professor (Exceptional Class) of Systems Biology at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS), Paris, France.
Since 2019, Denis Thieffry is also part-time Invited Research Professor at the Cancer Science Institute of the National University of Singapore.
Denis Thieffry’s research focuses on the development of computational methods and software (logical simulations, attractor identification, regulatory circuit analysis, model reduction, etc.) to enable the design and the analysis of comprehensive models of cellular regulatory network, integrating cell signalling with transcriptional and epigenetic regulatory mechanisms. This approach is used to decipher the regulatory mechanisms at the basis of cell fate decisions during normal embyronic development and cancer.

Loredana Martignetti is a computational biologist working in the Computational Systems Biology of Cancer group (Inserm U900) at Institut Curie in Paris. She works on innovative methods in the fields of data integration and systems biology for personalised medicine. Loredana Martignetti received her Ph.D. Degree in Complex systems for life sciences from University of Torino, Italy, in 2007. After her Ph.D, she joined Institut Curie in Paris working on microRNA deregulation in pediatric tumors. Her research interests include gene regulation, molecular networks and systems biology of complex disease.

Emmanuel Barillot research focuses on Computational Systems Biology of Cancer and aims at understanding tumorigenesis and tumor progression using and developing when needed computational approaches for analysing high-throughput data of tumors like multiomics and multimodal data. The main subjects are high-dimensional multi-modal data analysis with machine learning, modeling of signaling network and of spatial organization.
Emmanuel Barillot heads the Department of Computational Oncology at Institut Curie (U900 INSERM, in partnership with Mines ParisTech). He is also Scientific Director of the institut Curie Bioinformatics Core Facility, which is expert in biological data integration, omics data analysis, and support for precision medicine. He also holds a Chair in Cancer Genomics at the Paris Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (PRAIRIE). Emmanuel Barillot has published ~250 articles in bioinformatics, genomics, systems biology, cancer biology, translational and clinical cancer research, biophysics and computer science.

Dr. Benoukraf obtained his Ph.D. in Computational Biology at the Immunology Center of Marseille-Luminy, CNRS-INSERM, Aix-Marseille University. After 2 years of postdoctoral training, he gained his scientific independence by being awarded a "Special Fellowship" at the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore. Dr. Benoukraf is now a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Bioinformatics for Personalized Medicine, Assistant Professor, Division of BioMedical Sciences at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He is also a Visiting Assistant Professor and Co-Head of Genomics and Data Analytics Core (GeDaC) at the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore, National University of Singapore.
During the last decade, Dr. Benoukraf has focused his research on developing computational programs and methods for analyzing large genomic and epigenomic datasets with the aim of delineating novel biological mechanisms in pathophysiology.
Dr. Benoukraf's main scientific productions are technological and biological, ranging from the discovery of novel epigenetic mechanisms that regulate gene expression, to the development of a comprehensive database of transcription factor binding sites coupled with DNA methylation profiles.

Transcription factors are a type of proteins that regulate the synthesis of RNAs from genomic DNA (transcription). Transcriptional program is strictly regulated in a tissue- and stage-specific manner that requires a number of transcription factors to work in a cascade or in a loop. In other words, the disruption of transcriptional program alters cellular state and may predispose cells to the acquisition of genetic abnormalities, potentially giving rise to cancerous cell behavior. Interestingly, several transcription factors, which characterize cell identity and regulate developmental process (called “master transcription factors”), have been implicated as oncogenes in many cancers. Their oncogenic property can be attributed to their ability to govern the transcriptional program as a master regulator and to utilize the endogenous machinery unique to each cell type. In our laboratory, we aim to discover the roles of master transcription factors in tissue-specific oncogenesis.

Denis THIEFFRY has obtained his Ph. D in 1993 at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Brussels, Belgium, under the direction of René THOMAS. He is currently Professor (Exceptional Class) of Systems Biology at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS), Paris, France.
Since 2019, Denis Thieffry is also part-time Invited Research Professor at the Cancer Science Institute of the National University of Singapore.
Denis Thieffry’s research focuses on the development of computational methods and software (logical simulations, attractor identification, regulatory circuit analysis, model reduction, etc.) to enable the design and the analysis of comprehensive models of cellular regulatory network, integrating cell signalling with transcriptional and epigenetic regulatory mechanisms. This approach is used to decipher the regulatory mechanisms at the basis of cell fate decisions during normal embyronic development and cancer.
